Pedemontana Veneta: two PALADEX DN 2000 pipelines beneath the expressway
The spiral-wound steel-reinforced high-density polyethylene pipes pass beneath the route of the Pedemontana Veneta toll expressway to divert the Seriola and Brugnola irrigation channels.
The works
The scheme comprises two reinforced concrete structures: an inlet structure controlled by two manual sluice gates, and an outlet structure, a flow-splitting structure with two sluice gates to regulate flows into the irrigation channels. Between them, two parallel spiral-wound pipelines with an internal diameter of 2000 mm, each around 100 m long, have been laid to act as an inverted siphon.
Upstream, the new alignment connects to the Roggia Breganze via an earth channel; downstream it divides into the Roggia Brugnola to the west and the Roggia Seriola to the east.
Installation
The first phase delivered the inlet structure, the inverted siphon and around 80 m of the two pipelines beneath the new road; the southern section is completed once traffic has been diverted. After excavation to design level, the pipelines were laid, welded and covered with sand, with a surface protection of lean concrete and double-mesh reinforcement.
On site, the pipes proved easy to install and handle, with greater alignment accuracy and much shorter assembly times. Hydraulically, the smooth internal wall and the absence of sockets reduce roughness and deposits.
